Today, June 16, 2019, is Father's Day. It received nationwide holiday status in the year of 1972. Fifty-eight years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day an official U.S. holiday. Just as with Mother's Day, Christians do not worship fathers on this Sunday.
But, we do celebrate fathers who accept their family responsibilities and duties. Although, Father's Day does not have the same economical gains as Mother's Day. However, it too is a commercialized holiday.
But, can we gain any spiritual insight from this now commercialized holiday? Father is one who passes on life or creates. Or defined as one who originates or founded something.
For example: Abraham is the Father of Faith. Satan is the Father of lies and deceit. This let us know that father is not always positive. However, God is the Father of all truth and love.
Family was the first institution established by God. Fathers are the spiritual head of the family. They lead with love. Family members look to him for support and guidance. Such is the Family of God. God is Our Father, Protector and Provider. We, the church, are His children.
Yes, Father's Day is a day to honor earthly fathers of the family. But more importantly, it is a day to worship God, our Heavenly father. He is the perfect example of fatherhood. He is so forgiving, patient and gentle.
Fathers who mirror these attributes of God the Father, deserve honor. Because, they are fathers who make sure their children are aware of God through His Word. As well as, they obtain and teach their children obedience with love and gentleness. Not only do they love their wives as God loves the church. But they also share with them all the emotional duties and physical work in the home.
